Profile Q&A: John Gannon, Pro Surf Trainer

Where are you from in Australia?

I grew up in Maroubra, New South Wales — not that I spend much time there anymore. But it’s still home and always will be.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a trainer/exercise coach for surfing.

What are you currently working on?

I have been Taj Burrow’s trainer/travel mate on the ASP world surfing tour for the past three years.

Where are your current digs?

At the moment, we are doing pre-season training in Yallingup, West Oz.

When did you first visit the U.S.?

2007

What do you love about visiting the U.S.?

Depends where we visit. I really like the vibe hanging around Venice Beach, CA, and the madness of New York — the bars and restaurants are amazing.

Where and what inspires you in life?

Successful people. What makes them tick, how they keep themselves motivated and sort of where they draw their energy from.

When youre not working, what can you be found doing?

At this stage of the year, I’m surfing, training, stretching, eating healthy and getting our bodies and minds ready for a long year on the road. Because some of the spots on tour are so full-on, it’s good to rest and look after ourselves when we get a chance. Balance – ha.

Where would you like to see yourself to be in five years?

Staying in the surf industry, and I would like to open a high performance surf training gym.

Do you have a favorite quote?

If you keep doing what you are doing, you will keep getting what you are getting.

Do you have a mentor?

Yeah, I’m good mates with David Gyngell. I sometimes ask him for advice. And my Jiu Jitsu coach, Bruno Pano. He came to Australia from Brazil 10 years ago with nothing but a black belt. He couldn’t speak a word of English, and now he owns and runs five of the biggest Jiu Jitsu academies in NSW, and is semi retired.

What are your tips when flying to and from Australia?

Stay hydrated. A pinch of good quality sea salt in your water helps. Take your own food, if possible. Airline food is horrible.

Whats the best advice youve ever been given?

Have fun, but don’t be a dick head.

Jonnies Sauce: A few fellow Swagmen

Chris Hemsworth – actor: He just spent a few weeks with us in Hawaii surfing and training.

Heath Walker – Reef team manager: He lives in San Diego, and is married with a baby girl.

Jamo (James Willis) and Ronnie (Andrew Ronnie Flynn) – promoters: They are creating the best parties and clubs in New York.
