May Indie Music Guide – New York

New York is the place to be for good music this May with indie darlings bringing their summer tour to the Big Apple as well as some up-and-coming favourites set to make an appearance.

Check out The Thermals at (le) poisson rouge; these guys make rock/punk music in the vein of The Hold Steady and Titus Andronicus and their live shows are the real deal. Leave a little something for the next night because The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Twin Shadow are playing Webster Hall.  This is a one-two punch of dream pop and new wave done right, don’t forget your dancing shoes.

On May 11th, the much blogged about artist James Blake is playing Bowery Ballroom. Blake makes music that combines electronica, dubstep, R&B, and just about every other genre, and this will be the last time he plays a venue this small – don’t miss it.  Two days later Beirut (and no doubt their cult-like following) will be at Wellmont Theater showing experimental folk at its best—think accordions, banjos, and beautiful melodies.

On May 18th Fleet Foxes bring their summer tour to the United Palace Theater to promote their magical new album Helplessness Blues – no one does minimalist bluegrass harmony like these guys and we guarantee a real stunner.

Up-and-coming electro buzz band Austra hits Mercury Lounge May 23 – they sounds like a love child between The Knife and Florence and the Machine.

And finally, don’t miss Fang Island at Brooklyn Bowl May 27th.  These guys make good old-fashioned rock and roll dance music – standing still will be near impossible.
