A Broadway insider’s guide to NYC theater

Sarah McLellan has acted on Broadway, toured the country as lead singer of a rock band and now works as a food and travel writer and TV Host. She also founded the Australian Broadway Network (ABN) in 2009. Here, she gives Billabout her tips on how to get the best out of all the amazing theater in New York.

Australians currently on Broadway

Being in the industry, I have to suggest taking in some good ol’ musical theater when you are in NYC, and this season has some great shows opening. After opening in Australia to rave reviews and then on the West End in London, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” will start Broadway previews February 28. Oscar winning costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner are back on board for this production.

Another two shows have Australians involved: Michaeljon Slinger will be performing in “How to Succeed,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, and Carmel Dean is the musical director of Green Day’s “American Idiot” on Broadway.

There is quite a group of Australians that are here in the U.S. working in theater and on Broadway. To see who’s here and whats happening, check out the Australian Broadway Network.

Tips to Buying Tickets

If you are looking for cheap tickets, the best option is to check out what’s on the board at TKTS Discount Booths. They offer tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays at up to 50 percent off, and have locations in Times Square, South Street Seaport and Brooklyn.

Another good site for discount tickets is Theater Mania, which provides online ticketing for Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway and theater nationwide.

Pre- and post-show dining

If you are looking for a bite to eat before or after your show, stop by Angus McIndoe on 44th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. It’s a favourite with the Broadway community and you might just happen to be sitting next to one of the stars you just saw on stage!

Favorite Dish : Steamed mussels w/ smoked bacon and peas in white wine and cream sauce.
